Cost is the single biggest barrier to trying a creative class across the Northside. Our Work-Trade membership is built into the studio from day one to help with that, and we want to do more as the studio grows.
What this actually is today
Half the standard rate (€100/month instead of €200) in exchange for a set number of monthly studio-maintenance hours: clay recycling, glaze-room upkeep. This is the funded way membership stays affordable.
A reduced rate for anyone not in paid work, no work-trade hours required. For members whose circumstances — older adults on a fixed income, caring responsibilities, disability, unemployment — make committing regular hours difficult. Structure and pricing still to be finalised.
A reduced monthly rate for members happy to use the studio outside peak hours. Structure and pricing still to be finalised.
Beyond price
Feeling welcome
In our research, feeling like a studio was "cliquey" put people off coming back more than price did. That shapes how we run the room day to day, including staff training and how first classes are structured.
Reaching people, not just pricing for them
OAPs, people living with disability, and people experiencing isolation are among those least likely to walk in off the street, even with a reduced rate on the wall. Reaching them takes an actual outreach route, not just a price.
We're working with Dublin City Council on referral pathways into the Access Programme, so community and age-friendly services can point people our way directly rather than relying on them finding the studio themselves. Details to follow as this is confirmed.
